A look at the Fleek app. These days, college kids are on Fleek. No, not ' as in they are cool or good, they are literally on — an app becoming popular on campuses as an unfiltered alternative to Snapchat. 'It's like Snapchat, but with more boobs,' one Georgetown University sophomore, who wished to remain anonymous, bluntly described the app to Tech Insider. The app started gaining popularity on the Georgetown campus at the end of fall semester in 2015. Fleek, like Snapchat, lets users upload and share videos and photos that disappear after a set amount of time. Users select their university and all posts are compiled into a giant story that can be viewed by anyone using the app.
Here are a few examples: Here's what you can expect to find on Fleek. Fleek screenshots Unlike what you see on an official Snapchat story, posts on Fleek aren't moderated Anyone can submit anything — think nudity, kegs, and marijuana —and it'll go up on the app. Plus, there's also a peek feature that let's people who aren't on campus take a look. 'I like that it's not curated,' Georgetown sophomore (and former Tech Insider intern!) Will Haskell said. 'A lot of Snapchat stories are so highly curated and when you live in a major city like we do, you have such a low likelihood of seeing your Snap make the cut. Fleek feels more real.' Of course, that's not necessarily a good thing for a college campus. 'The stakes are definitely raised on Fleek because everything you send is going to go on the app,' Haskell also explained.
'People are definitely going to see it.' For the most part, the Georgetown students we talked to said the content on Fleek is harmless, if not a little NSFW. Fleek screenshots But, as you might have already guessed, not every student is prudent about what they post on the app. And like Snapchat, it's to save Fleek posts for later viewing or sharing.
'One of my friends posted a video of me that was pretty violating,' a female student, who also wished to remain anonymous, told TI about a video that was shared of her suggestively licking a lollipop. 'Multiple people texted me about it after it happened.' Fleek isn't the only app on the market offering a potentially controversial look at college life. Yeti-Campus Stories offers a similar platform and, after a video of an alleged sexual assault was shared on the app. Fleek has already been met with resistance at schools like. Still, at Georgetown, nothing serious has happened as a result of Fleek. At least, not yet.
'It's only a matter of time,' Haskell said. 'It's really a problem waiting to happen.' 'Post smash' is college speak for post coital. Fleek screenshots.

Local police were alerted, and although the app is anonymous, Yeti provided metadata about when and where the video was uploaded, along with other information that allowed authorities to find the person who shot it.Ben Kaplan, Yeti's director of communications, says the company acted swiftly once it noticed that the video was the subject of a lot of chatter on the app.' If something makes it on to the network and it's brought to our attention, we can be proactive in the rare instance like this Florida A&M University case.' The person who shot the video has been questioned by police, and a victim of the alleged assault has been found, but no arrests have been made.Follow BBC Trending on FacebookJoin the conversation on this and other stories. To control what goes onto the app, Yeti enlists the help of a group of heavy users called Campus Yetis, who act like moderators. They're not employed by Yeti or paid by the company - in fact, Yeti don't even know their names because like users, they are also anonymous.
But they voluntarily take on the task of approving or disapproving videos and images according to the app's guidelines. One moderator told BBC Trending that he regularly sees - and votes down - posts about drugs and sex.' If I see people doing drugs, I don't post them, because that's just something I don't want people bragging about. We know students do drugs, there's no point posting those things online,' Jamal Hafiz told BBC Trending.Hafiz, a firefighter in Gainesville, Florida, is a moderator on the University of Florida network (which is separate from Florida A&M). But he's not a student at the school and, at the age of 25, he's older than many of the students using the app.' I've also voted down porn.
People having sex and things like that - I've denied all that too,' he says.Hafiz says police in his town keep an eye on the app to look out for criminal activity, and that despite the moderators, illegal activity does slip through.' If you click on Snapchat, you'll see it's the complete opposite to what Yeti is. You see people eating lunch, or doing something fun. You won't see drugs or nudity on Snapchat. It's completely day and night compared to Yeti.' BBC Trending RadioHear more on this story - and more from the Trending team - on our.

In the beginning of December, a video of a possible sexual assault was uploaded to a social-media site called Yeti - Campus Stories. The video, uploaded to Florida A&M's Yeti feed, appears to show a man facing away from the camera, possibly sexually assaulting an incapacitated woman,.It's not clear if the individuals in the video were affiliated with Florida A&M, and Tallahassee, Florida, police have been investigating the incident. But the video highlights a criticism of Yeti — that students unabashedly post details of their arguably inappropriate or destructive behavior to the app.
Yeti features, among many other things, threads of students taking selfies and photos of each other before and after doing the deed. Both male and female students are taking part, and these NSFW photos and sometimes videos are being used to brag on Yeti and to their entire schools that they just got smashed. If you've never seen this free app before, it looks a lot like Snapchat, except story feeds are separated by schools. So far, there are stories available for Florida State University, Texas Tech, University of Florida, North Carolina State University, University of South Carolina, University of Tennessee, and Colorado University, just to name a few.Yeti launched in March 2015 and is essentially a Snapchat with no rules — the app is completely self-governing.

The individual stories are moderated almost entirely by students aka “Campus Yetis,” which makes this app one very interesting social experiment about what college kids do when no one is watching. Based out of California, a source at Yeti HQ told us they are processing thousands of posts every hour, and already have hundreds of thousands of daily active users (all college students). Users on the app can save any videos and photos to their phones, and if you miss your chance, don’t worry, you can rewatch content as many times as you want. Meanwhile, Snapchat only lets you screenshot photos that you can see once or twice, and routinely shuts down accounts that post mature content. On Yeti, the individual photos and videos are called “yeets,” and posting them is completely anonymous, inviting students to post an uncensored version of college life. So, what does that look like exactly?
